Pertains to Fox River Trail, Lake Barrington
A 4-mile trail system and two lengthy timber boardwalks will be among the improvements at the Fox River Forest Preserve Addition near Lake Barrington.

The Lake County Forest Preserve District board on Tuesday approved a master plan for the preserve in the southwest portion of the county that calls for about $4 million in eventual work.

The first part of the work, including habitat restoration, is estimated at more than $2.6 million. That includes a mile of gravel trail connecting the existing Fox River Forest Preserve to a parking area off Roberts Road, and 3 miles of looping grass or natural surface trails for hiking or biking.

Two 350-foot-long timber boardwalks, a scenic overlook of adjacent wetlands, a paved 10-car parking lot off Roberts Road, toilet facilities and fen and woodland restoration also are part of the project.

The Fox River Preserve and Marina was acquired by the district beginning in 1992. Three additional parcels totaling about 322 acres primarily north of Roberts Road were acquired in 2000 and 2009. That land has roughly doubled the size of the preserve.

The addition is separated from existing parking and trails by Roberts Road and wetland areas, however, and was not part of the original master plan.

Planning for the addition begin in June. In November, about 42 people attended an informal open house at the Lake Barrington village hall.

Public comments and staff recommendations were included in the master plan, which was approved Tuesday.

Engineering is expected to begin in 2011 with construction to follow in 2012. Funding for the project was approved as part of the current capital improvement plan.

Future work, estimated at about $1.5 million, could include a trail system and two more boardwalks to connect to an island west of the Saddlewood subdivision.
