Dozens of people attended a recent groundbreaking ceremony in Alsip marking the halfway point of the Calumet-Sag Trail, a planned 26-mile stretch of recreational trails from Burnham to Lemont.

The federal government recently awarded a grant that will pay 80 percent of the cost to engineer the 26-mile trail, which will pass through 14 communities, according to Mike Leonard, Palos Heights director of parks and recreation.

Each local government agency involved in the project has signed on to an agreement that calls for a 20 percent match of engineering costs, he said.

Total cost of the multipurpose trail is projected at $18 million, Leonard said.

The groundbreaking ceremony Saturday was designed to show gratitude to the public and private agencies that have supported the trail and to draw new interest to the project as it moves forward, said Jeannette Huber, director of the Alsip Park District.

"I expect this to be one of the most-used trails on the network," state Sen. Edward Maloney (D-Chicago) told about 150 people who gathered for the ceremony at Freedom Park in Alsip. Maloney rode his bike to the event, as did many others in attendance.

The Friends of the Calumet-Sag Trail recently accepted a $35,000 grant from Rails to Trails Conservancy to pay for the trail's landscape plan, Leonard said.

The trail is now in Phase I engineering. If all goes as planned, construction of the 10-foot wide asphalt trail should begin in 2011 with a target completion date of 2012, Leonard said.
