A party will be held Saturday where what one day will be the midpoint of the Calumet-Sag Trail, a 26-mile asphalt route linking 14 communities from Burnham to Lemont.

Beginning at opposite ends of the trail, ceremonies will be held leading up to the 4 p.m. celebration at Freedom Park in Alsip featuring speeches and live music.

Bob Lukens, president of The Friends of the Calumet-Sag Trail, has been looking forward to this day for years.

"It's a real exciting day for us. This will be a great way to link 14 communities along the Little Calumet River and the Cal Sag Channel," Lukens said.

"It will become a major east-west transportation corridor that hooks up to four Metra stations and gives people an opportunity to get to various transportation centers without dealing with traffic," said Lukens, who is public relations manager for the Chicago Southland Convention
